Just last week I talked about a Funeral Home that was letting you write your own obituary and keep it on file with them, then they would put it in the paper and on line when you die. I said what a great way to get the last word in an argument. Well, it isn't the last work in an argument but OUCH!!!! J. Philip "Phil" Self, 66, of 7348 Cardigan Circle, NE, Atlanta, Georgia, died Wednesday, October 10, 2012. Services will be private. The family will greet friends on Sunday, October 14, 2012 from 2:00PM until 3:00PM at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Judge Tilman E. and Mary Paul Self Scholarship Fund, Mercer School of Law, 1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31207.
Phil is the son of the late Judge Tilman E. and Mary Paul Davis Self of Macon. He is survived by two sons, Rev. J. Philip Self, Jr., of Nashville, and Matthew J. Self, of Orlando, a daughter, Jessica Self (James) Hawbaker, of Birmingham, and three grandchildren, Amanda L. and Jonathan L. Self and Crosby J. Hawbaker. He is also survived by his brother William J. "Bill" (Jane) Self, of Macon, his sister Alera Jill Elliott, of Atlanta, and several nieces and nephews, and was predeceased in death by his brother Tilman E. (Celeste) Self, Jr., of Knoxville, GA.
Phil graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia (BBA-Acct'g) and summa cum laude from the UGA School of Law (J.D.). He was a Certified Public Accountant. He practiced law in Atlanta for over 35 years.
Phil was a diehard Georgia Bulldogs fan and was a season tickets holder for decades. It is a shame that the last game he saw was the tragedy last Saturday night.
